Yes. Many science fiction authors dislike Sci-Fi, considering it demeaning to the genre. (They frequently retaliate by calling Literary Fiction Li-Fi.) There is a story about Robert Heinlein being scheduled to appear for a radio interview and, on his way to the station, the DJ announced the upcoming live interview and said, "He's a real Sci-Fi Guy!" Heinlein turn the car around and drove home. No word on whether he informed the radio station about why. (Also no idea if that it a true story. LOL)


This particular novel is now pretty much in the "Science Fantasy" category, or what would be categorized as "Speculative Fiction" by a lot of measures because it straddles the line between science fiction and fantasy. (By the end it will be closer to science fiction, but for now, it seems far more like fantasy.)
