March's Manly Movie Month

19 posts in this topic

It's Women's history month in the United States of America! So my sister and I decided to watch manly movies to somehow celebrate it. I decided to talk my sister and brother into taking before-and-after pics for humor value.

We'll only be watching manly movies on Thursday, Friday and Sunday and every other Wednesday.

My sister picked out the movies, but I used a decision wheel to decide which one to watch. Any suggestions, I'll let my sister know.

Our first movie was Full Metal Jacket. In terms of the theme of the movie selection, I thought it was a deconstruction of a manly movie. So we're off to a depressing start.

Here's the list my sister made. Any suggestions you guys make, I'll let my sister know. It's up to her what ones that will be added to the list. Keep in mind we won't be watching them all. Just the ones the decision wheel picks.

Terminator 1 & 2, Hang'em high, Soldier, Tombstone, Boondock saints, Predator, Spartacus, Death wish, 300, Masters of the Universe, Rambo 1-3, the Rocky movies, Dredd, the Darkman Movies, Starship troopers, Gladiator, The Dirty Harry movies, Raging Bull, Godfather movies, Scarface (both the 30's and the 80's versions), High Plains drifter, Die Hard, Conan the Barbarian, Commando, Expendables, Mad Max, Escape from Alcatraz, Pale Rider, True Crime, Paint your wagon, Indiana Jones 1-3, The G.I. Joe Cartoon movie, and the Escape from N.Y. and L.A. movies.

I'll let my sister know about your suggestion, but I can't promise anything. She's rather picky.

As for what movie we watched today, it was one I forgot to add to that list. Universal Soldier.

So... It kinda felt like it borrowed notes from both First Blood and Terminator 2. That's my thoughts on it. Dunno if that's good or bad.

My brother said the chemically-enhanced-and-genetically-modified soldiers reminded him of the Captain America Movie. No, not that one. The one that was released in 1990. The Bad One.

My Sister liked having Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren in the same movie.

Watched Spartacus.

Sister thought it was very manly.

Brother liked it and was amused at an arm being chopped off in a PG13 movie.

I thought was it was entertaining to watch, even if we had to split it in half and watch it on Sunday and Tuesday.

GData1954, I asked my sister about that movie and she said no. I asked why and she said it was because John McClane couldn't say his catchphrase and she doesn't care much for the computer terrorism stuff. I thought he did say it, but I wasn't going to argue with her about it I guess she's inherited my deceased Dad's views on action movies.

very odd on that but i know for sure you will like the movie and the story is these two Secret Service agents are going after counterfeiter after one of their own was killed by the counterfeiter. the movie is one of Rockstar games favorites movies that haves been in vice city and GTA 5 where one of achievements in GTA 5 called To Live or Die in Los Santos is movie reference to that movie

On Wednesday, we watched A fistful of dollars.

While we all liked it, my sister and I joked about a few things about our selection in manly movies so far.

I joked that it was the happiest ending we had so far.

My sister joked back that maybe it was the lack of women in the movie as the cause for the happy ending.

On Thursday, we watched Paint your Wagon.  It's a tale about the rise and fall of a boom town, while also focusing on a relationship between two men and a woman in the gold rush days of California. And yes, it's a western musical.

My bro and I though that Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood weren't bad singers as the internet made them out to be. There's worse singers on TV and in Movies.

My sister was mock-disappointed that were was no songs about painting wagons.

On Friday, we watched Starship Troopers

I enjoyed it and the satire, but mostly I did a MST3k thing where I pretended that everyone (Save for Gary Busey's son) dumped the Main character.

My brother thought it was entertaining.

My sister enjoyed pointing out a ll the actors she knew.

On Sunday, we tried to watch Tombstone. Because we didn't have a copy, we watched an episode of Maverick instead. It was Duel at Sundown.

We liked it, even though Clint Eastwood plays a bad guy in it. Threw us all off for a little bit.

Thursday, we watched Soldier. The one that is set in the Blade Runner universe.

We liked it. At most, I think we made a few Doctor Who jokes because one of the actors kinda looked like they'd be the Doctor. At least I did. It went onto a discussion about how much bothered the Doctor would be to wind up in the Blade Runner universe

Friday, we got a copy of Tombstone. We also ate Tombstone pizzas while watching it. As for the Movie, it was enjoyable.

I actually had a hard time recognizing Kurt Russel. It was the mustache and something I'll be talking about myself in a few days, nothing bad mind you.

My brother and sister talked about which star will we be watching the most in the upcoming movies.

On Sunday, we watched something my sister wanted us to watch.

Boondock Saints.

I honestly thought it was kinda average. Seemed a bit of wish fulfillment by someone with a lot of power over the film.

My brother and sister seemed to enjoy it.

I wonder if I have a preference for old west films over action films set in modern day?

I've been trying to find decent movies to watch with my Mom, and i find myself struggling...

Recent movies are very unatractive, imho....Tried watching that Chinese Wall movie, with Matt Damon, couldn't make it past 30min in.

Watched Moonlight, since there was so much talking about it since the Oscars...and it was so meh, i got to the end and was like: this is it? i want this 2 hrs of my life back.

A few weeks ago had the brilliant idea of watching King Cobra. My Mom loves movies that are based on true events, so i thought: why not? Let's see what this is about... (why didn't i read the description???why???)

Is there anything stranger than watching a half gay porn crazy movie on a sunday afternoon with your Mom on the couch???...another 2hrs of my life i want back.

I'm tempted to give La La Land a go, since there's so much praise going on around it, but after the disappointment from Moonlight, i'm kinda wary about it.

I asked my sister and she suggested Spotlight, Munich, and Changeling.
